Today, 38 illegal immigrants have been detained on the Latvian border, and none in Latvia on the Lithuanian border

Today, until noon, 38 third-country nationals detained at the Latvian border who tried to cross the state border illegally, the LETA agency found out at the State Border Guard.

It has already been reported that, assessing the situation in Lithuania, as well as taking into account the growing risks on the Latvian-Belarusian state border, enhanced border surveillance had already been introduced and the resources of the State Border Guard and the army for green border surveillance had been mobilized. Support is also provided by four experts from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (JV) and Minister of the Interior Marija Golubeva (AP) announced that Latvia plans to accelerate the construction of the Latvian-Belarusian border infrastructure and attract additional army forces to its security.

If the State Border Guard decided to come with a call to declare a state of emergency on the Latvian-Belarusian border, then the Minister of the Interior Marija Golubeva (AP) would be ready to address the government with such a call.

On the other hand, no illegal immigrants entered Lithuania during the day, but about 250 people who tried to enter Lithuania illegally were forced to return to Belarus, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service and Statistics Department said on Saturday.

Most illegal migrants forced to return to Belarus at night on Friday and Friday morning, by noon on Friday, their total number reached about 160.

Lithuanian border guards have noticed an increase in the number of border guards on the Belarusian side of the border.

In the Šalčininkai district, Lithuanian border guards have allowed two Iraqi citizens to enter Lithuania for humanitarian reasons – a woman with a minor child who has been a survivor. They were taken by ambulance to the hospital where the child was diagnosed with hypothermia. These two Iraqi nationals have not been included in the statistics on illegal migrants by Statistics Lithuania.

The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service indicates that there have been no serious incidents during the past day, no special equipment, firearms or physical force have been used.

The flow of illegal migrants across the Lithuanian-Belarusian border has reportedly increased sharply recently. Since the beginning of this year, the total number of illegal immigrants apprehended has reached 4112. Most illegal migrants want to enter Western European countries through Lithuania.

Lithuanian officials point out that the Belarussian regime is deliberately facilitating the flow of migrants across the border, as Lithuania supports the democratic opposition in Belarus and has given asylum to its leader Svyatlan Cihanouska.
