To make it cheap, the Ministry of Transportation asks manufacturers to sell electric motorbikes without batteries

Jakarta

Ministry of Communications or Ministry of Transportation urged two-wheeled manufacturers to sell electric motor without battery. Because, by doing so, the price of electric motorbikes in Indonesia can be more affordable.

Main Expert Staff of the Minister of Transportation (Menhub) for Land Transportation and Connectivity, Budi Setiyadi said, 40 percent of the cost of producing electric motorbikes comes from batteries. That’s why, by not including the battery, the price of these vehicles is cheaper and the demand is also increasing.

“Why are selling small electric motorbikes? Because the price is still quite high. Well, the most expensive component in an electric motorbike is the battery. Nearly 40 percent of it,” said Budi Setiyadi when met in Central Jakarta recently.

“That’s why, if you can sell a motorbike, it doesn’t come with a battery. So buy a motorbike but without a battery. So the price can be lowered,” he added.

Budi, who also serves as General Chair of AISMOLI (Indonesian Electric Motorcycle Industry Association), claims that the swap battery system is currently the most ideal for Indonesia. Electric motorbike users only need to pay the battery rental fee every day.

Several years ago, Budi had met with BSN to discuss standardization of electric motor batteries in Indonesia, including component dimensions. He hopes, all uniforms are made to make it easier for the wearer.

“I have communicated with BSN (National Standardization Agency) so that the battery that can be swapped, if possible, has the same battery dimensions. So any brand of motorbike can use the same battery,” he said.

Furthermore, Budi confirmed, sales of electric motorbikes in Indonesia are still far from impressive. It’s just a mess, from 2019 to 2022, these non-emission vehicles only sold 30 thousand units. In fact, in the same period, gasoline motorbikes have sold tens of millions of units.

“From 2019 to 2022, around 30,800 units of electric motorbikes (sold in Indonesia). Indeed, compared to ICE motorbikes, that is very far away. Only a few percent. Because the ICE is up to 29 million in three years,” he explained .

“We already have a target for what the government wants, we will try to make it happen. At the regulatory level it is good, but at the production level, there are some obstacles that all of you are experiencing,” he added.
