Tim Hofman says goodbye to Kiki and Patrick in emotional episode

While on holiday in Thailand with her parents and sister, the then 14-year-old Kiki suddenly becomes ill. In the hospital in Bangkok on July 24, 2019, an unexpected diagnosis is made: Kiki turns out to have liver cancer with metastases in her lungs. In the episode of February 23 it appears that Kiki also has metastases in her spine. She then goes on holiday to Renesse with her family, but after that it quickly goes downhill. Kiki passed away on July 14, 2021. “Who would have thought that this fate would befall you”, says her mother at the funeral. “I can only be proud of you Kiek, the way you handled this. Straighten up and move on. You have never complained in the past two years. Better me than anyone else you said.”

Despite her diagnosis, Kiki decided not to give up and check as much as possible off her bucket list. For example, she married her best friend. She also thought it was important to decorate her own urn and coffin. “If it does happen, then you better make it a nice moment.”

Tim also says goodbye to Patrick in the episode, who has chosen euthanasia because he does not want long suffering and wants to go ‘as Patrick’. The adventurous Patrick lives in Aruba in 2019 with his great love Tibby and son Norwin when he gets vague intestinal complaints. Back in the Netherlands, the first thought is spastic bowel due to stress surrounding the move to Aruba. Several investigations follow and on June 17, 2019 Patrick is told that he has colon cancer. The metastases seem to be treatable after the first operation in which Patrick gets a stoma. But further research shows that he has a very rare cancer that only occurs in 1% of people. The tumor in his abdomen can cause a fatal kink in his intestines at any time and so it is difficult to make a prognosis.

Earlier it was shown how Patrick and his wife had a conversation with a so-called SCEN doctor who has to assess whether there is unbearable and hopeless suffering. “If it goes the way I want, then at some point I’ll just say: I want euthanasia that day,” Patrick said earlier. Euthanasia takes place five days after the consultation with the doctor. According to his brother Antoine, Patrick is ready. “The cake is gone. He can’t do it anymore,” he tells Tim. “You just see that he is ready and that gives everyone peace of mind.”

Patrick passed away on October 26, 2020 at the age of 32, or in his own words: traveled to a new gate in his life.

Over my dead body can be seen every Wednesday at 9.30 pm at BNNVARA on NPO 1. Watch last Wednesday’s episode here back.
