Mascha K. * (17) from the canton of Zurich has often had symptoms that felt like heart cramps. But she never really took them seriously. “Then I really collapsed last Wednesday,” she says. The teaching daughter in the health sector collapsed in the vocational school in Winterthur. “My best friend then called a taxi and took me to the emergency room at the cantonal hospital.”
–
There the doctors asked if she could imagine what had caused the heart problem. Mascha K. has congenital scoliosis, i.e. a twisted spine. This presses on the heart. That was beneficial, but not the main reason for the collapse. “When I told them how much Red Bull I drink a day, the doctors said that was the reason.” Because: The apprentice drank nine to twelve cans a day.

“Energy drinks are an addictive substance”
The 17-year-old drinks it in huge quantities. “I started drinking so many Red Bulls at work. It started with a Zigi and a Red Bull in the morning, then in every break, after work and in the evening with colleagues. ” It’s a real addiction. Mascha: “I needed it in the morning to wake up and in the breaks to come down. You can relax for five minutes and drink a Red Bull. But energy drinks are addictive. “

Mascha published a video on Tiktok in which she shows herself in the hospital bed. To Blick she says: “I warn everyone – keep your measure. Energy drinks are not good for the heart! “

“My heart reacts immediately to it”
It was not thirst that made her reach for the cans. «It was like an addiction. Now I’ve cut down, but I still need at least one or two a day. “
–
But: “As soon as I drink one, it starts again – the heart reacts immediately.” She wants to say to everyone: “You only notice that you drink too much of it when it is already too late.” (ct)
