A fear for national security
Indeed, the platform is the property of the Chinese ByteDance, which could be blamed for links with the government of the country. Several countries have suspended use of the app by their officials. And, New York City is the latest to ban TikTok on its teams’ work phones.
The directive released Wednesday comes after a review by NYC Cyber Command. A city official said TikTok posed a security threat to the city’s technical networks. Effective immediately, the New York City Council prohibits its employees from downloading or using the app and accessing the TikTok website from any city-owned device.
30 days to comply
The ban takes effect immediately, and city employees will have 30 days to remove TikTok from their work phones. Recall that earlier this year, Montana became the first state to ban TikTok statewide. There remains another problem: the verification of the effectiveness of this measure!
