Tiago Morais and Nuno Gomes Conversation: Reflecting on Boavista, Benfica, and Football

To mark three years since Tiago Morais became Boavista’s youngest player, Record brought him together with Nuno Gomes for a conversation about football, the Boavista club and life at Benfica. From 21 to 21. But Boavista is not the only connection point between the two…

A – In addition to your connection to Boavista, your paths crossed at Benfica: Tiago as a player, Nuno as training director. Tiago, what do you remember?

TM – I was 13 years old. I remember the moment I went to sign, Nuno was in the room. I have it well in my memory, I don’t know if he remembers it well…

NG – I also have this…

TM – I cherish these moments. I was at Benfica for a year, but then we went our separate ways.

NG – I remember because Tiago was one of the players we had our eye on. He was being coveted by other clubs and we managed to get him to come to Benfica. I remember signing a contract with him. At younger ages there are players who adapt better than others, it’s part of growing as a person and player. I’m sure Tiago remembers those moments and grew from them as a person.

A – Tiago is from Espinho. Did you miss home?

TM – It’s like Nuno says. Sometimes it’s not just one reason… I’ve grown a lot. There were difficult moments, others with victories. I think so, it was a bit of homesickness, I was very young. I didn’t have the maturity I have today, but I think it was a good step I took at the time.
