It was the first big appearance of the climate activist Greta Thunberg and her fellow campaigners after months of forced Corona break. No Friday school strikes, no mass protests – that also meant less public interest in the cause of the climate movement Fridays for Future. The activists should therefore consider the meeting with the Chancellor on Thursday as a success just for the sake of attention. For 90 minutes, Angela Merkel and the activists Thunberg, Luisa Neubauer, Anuna De Wever Van der Heyden and Adélaïde Charlier sat across from one another at an extensive conference table in the Chancellery. At least as far apart, however, are the demands of Fridays for Future and what is politically possible in terms of climate policy in the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union.
