Good news for Visma – Lease a Bike. Jonas Vingegaard has finally been allowed to leave the hospital in Spain after his death in the Tour of the Basque Country. The Danish Tour winner stayed there for no fewer than twelve days, including a period in intensive care.
On April 4, Vingegaard broke his collarbone and several ribs in a heavy crash during the fourth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country. He also suffered a lung contusion and a collapsed lung. According to Spanish media, this was the reason why the Dane was only able to undergo surgery days after his horror crash.
The 27-year-old Vingegaard had a serious crash with Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic, among others, about 30 km from the finish. A large number of riders missed a right turn and subsequently fell. Vingegaard initially remained motionless and after initial treatment on the spot, the Dane was taken away in a stretcher. He appeared to be receiving oxygen and was wearing a neck brace. What these fractures mean for Vingegaard’s chances of winning the Tour for the third time in a row remains to be seen. La Grande Boucle starts on June 29.

Twelve days later, Vingegaard can go home. “A message from Jonas,” writes Visma – Lease a Bike on X. “Hello everyone! It’s time to leave the hospital. I would like to thank the medical staff for the great help. I would also like to thank all the people who have morally supported me. I have received a huge number of messages, as well as gifts and drawings. That was really heartwarming for me! Now is the time to make a full recovery. Thumbs’ up!”
