A year ago, the corona virus emerged in our country, and our shopping habits also changed. The supermarket chain Aldi delved into the figures. Toilet paper was sold en masse, but millions more bottles of wine were also uncorked.

Aldi compared the sales figures of a series of products in the past corona year (from March 2020 to February 2021) with the twelve months before. The images from March of shopping carts loaded with only toilet paper remain on everyone’s retina. And that is also evident from the figures. Aldi sold 3 million extra rolls of toilet paper in the past year of corona.

Another bestseller was disinfectant. The discounter sold more than 63,000 liters of hand gel. During the lockdown there was also a lot of baking, cooking and drinking. In the past year, Aldi sold nearly 1.7 million extra bottles of red wine, more than 1.6 million extra bottles of rosé and more than 1.5 million extra bottles of white wine.

As far as baking is concerned, 1.2 million kilograms more flour were sold, and extra yeast for more than 2 million loaves. Still in the shopping cart: more than 248,000 kilograms extra apples, more than 690,000 kilograms extra pears, more than 730,000 kilograms extra carrots and more than 410,000 kilograms extra tomatoes.

Pasta also went smoothly over the counter. Compared to a year earlier, Aldi customers went home with more than 5 million plates of pasta extra. And almost twice as many meat substitutes were put in the shopping cart.
