Threatening clouds seen in the sky over Lanaudière on Sunday afternoon

Part of the Lanaudière region was the subject, Sunday afternoon, of a severe thunderstorm alert that could cause flash floods, hail or tornadoes that some people may have thought they saw.

Photos have circulated on the internet where we can see a kind of point down or funnel emerging from the clouds, especially over the St. Lawrence River in the Lavaltrie sector and above the eastern end of Repentigny , at the limit of Saint-Sulpice.

Contacted by the QMI Agency, an Environment Canada meteorologist monitoring the situation in the region, Frédérick Boulay, explained that it is not a tornado, but “what is called an arcus, a “scud”, in English, on the front of the storm “. “It’s not rotating. The radar is not picking up rotation, he said. In the photos, we see a cloud coming down from the storm, but we cannot conclude that it has rotated. ”

He added that although radar surveillance does not conclude that there was rotation, “that does not mean that there was not”.

The phenomenon still impressed many who took pictures and shared them.

Environment Canada had transmitted, at 4:40 p.m., a severe thunderstorm alert for the Rawdon and Joliette sector, but the L’Assomption sector to Lavaltrie, via Repentigny and Saint-Sulpice, was also affected. The strongest storm took place over the river. The cell then headed for the Richelieu, in Montérégie, passing in particular over Saint-Hyacinthe.

At around 5:30 p.m., Environment Canada reported no damage related to this thunderstorm.
