Thousands of people have completely ruined their backpacks by washing them incorrectly. Find out how to clean it perfectly and not break its functions

After a strenuous journey or when you find that your children’s school bag has been rotting for a few weeks, you may be wondering how to properly wash the backpack. You’ve probably thought about putting it in the washing machine – it’s possible, but you should follow a few basic rules.

You prefer to wash by hand

In fact, especially with more expensive and better quality backpacks, it is better to wash them by hand. Fill the sink or tub with warm water, dissolve the detergent or add detergent, and scrub the backpack thoroughly. You can use, for example, a toothbrush, which will perfectly reach all the creases and you will be sure that you have scrubbed everything properly.

Preparation before washing in the washing machine

Before putting your backpack in the washing machine, do some basic preparations. First of all, check if the backpack has any advice on how to wash it. If the label says machine washable, don’t be afraid to use this simpler option.

Before putting the backpack in the washing machine, inspect it thoroughly. There should be no items left anywhere, if possible completely empty all sand, small items and dirt that may have been trapped in pockets or creases.

It is important not to put it in the washing machine if, for example, it has large mud stains: these must be removed first to prevent the washing machine from becoming clogged.

How to wash a backpack in the washing machine

Before putting the backpack in the washing machine, remove, if possible, all the buckles that could be damaged or otherwise cause damage in the washing machine.

If you decide to machine wash your backpack, wash it at the lowest possible temperature. It will be ideal if you slip it into a pillowcase to protect the surface that could be damaged. You just have to add a small amount of detergent to the laundry – keep in mind that if you add too much, it could stick to the surface of the backpack and leave unsightly light spots on it. After washing your backpack, do not put it in the dryer, but let it dry on a clothesline, for example.
