Thousands of complaints due to pressure on the Tax Authorities site

The Tax and Customs Administration reports on its own website that ‘it is currently very busy on My Tax Authorities’. If you are unable to log in, you will be advised to file a tax return at a later date or to see if they can use the app for this.

The systems are designed for 100,000 people who want to file a tax return at the same time, but at peak times the number of people trying to do so is sometimes far above that, says a spokesperson for the tax authorities. Via Twitter, the service offers apologies for the inconvenience.

Thousands of complaints

The website allestoringen.nl has already received thousands of complaints. Including people who say that their data is not loaded.

Since today, Dutch people can file a tax return again. Millions of private individuals and entrepreneurs do that for the year 2019. Last year, 470,000 people made their declaration on the first day. Never have there been so many.

Annoying

The spokesperson calls it very annoying if they are unable to make a declaration today. “We are making every effort. We know that the first day is a busy day, but the large number of people who want to report it is putting pressure on our system.”

Tips for your tax return

For many people doing a tax return is an annoying job, but it can be quite worthwhile to take a good look at it.

An important tip to save money: if you have to make a declaration (you will receive a letter or message about this in your digital message box), do not be late. That can result in a hefty fine of 385 euros. Before you get it, you have to make it fur: if you are late you will first get a reminder and then a reminder.

Another tip: usually the tax deductions are not pre-entered by the tax authorities. You are a thief of your own wallet if you do not give it up.

The most important item for many people is the mortgage interest deduction. You can deduct the interest you paid on your mortgage from your gross income. You thus reduce the amount on which you have to pay tax. Because homeowners quickly pay thousands of euros in mortgage interest per year, this deductible item often yields hundreds to thousands of euros in benefits.
