This week, Latvia will switch to summer time on Sunday night

The time change is taking into account that at the level of the European Union (EU) a common vision on new conditions regarding the time change twice a year has not yet been reached. Currently, the previously approved procedure is still valid – summer time in Latvia is valid from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October. Therefore, summer time will be valid until October 27 this year.

Daylight saving time was first introduced in Latvia in 1981. Since 1997, summer time is valid from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October.

It has already been reported that in 2018 in Europe, the issue of the need to review the current clock readjustment procedure came up. Therefore, the European Commission (EC) conducted a survey of citizens of the EU member states, in which the majority of citizens expressed the opinion that the existing order should be abolished.

The EC presented the draft of a new directive to the EU member states, calling for the end of seasonal time changes throughout the EU. However, since the member states needed additional time for national consultations and identifying the wishes of the population, a common vision on the EU level regarding new conditions regarding the change of time twice a year has not yet been achieved.

The Latvian government decided that Latvia as a whole supports abandoning the seasonal time change.
