This super sports car has covered 1,089,290 kilometers | Mobility

The 911 Turbo was one of the fastest Porsches money could buy twenty years ago. With its 420hp and a top speed of 305km/h, the car was not only lightning fast, but also super reliable. This also follows from the story of the American Tom Thalmann.

At the beginning of 2000, Thalmann bought a then brand new Porsche 911 Turbo of the type 996. The American was delighted with his acquisition, which was equipped with a 3.6-liter boxer engine with two turbos. Now, 22 years later, more than a million kilometers are on the odometer. That’s almost 25 laps around the earth.

Mezger engine

It seems strange, because the Porsche 996 engine is not exactly known for its reliability. However, such problems mostly affect the standard 996 models. The fastest versions – the Turbo, GT3 and GT2 – have a different type of engine. This so-called Mezger engine, named after its developer at Porsche, enjoys an excellent reputation.

Count up to 999,999 kilometres

After 616,000 kilometers the engine had to be disassembled to replace the turbos and repair some oil leaks. Then the engine was checked and resealed. There are now exactly 1,089,290 kilometers on the odometer, with the original engine.

At least, there isn’t, because the counter doesn’t go beyond 999,999 kilometres. The computer can still display it in miles. At the moment, the odometer is at 676,854 miles, so the equivalent is 1,089,290 kilometers.

Track day

Tom is convinced that he will use his German car for a long time to come and takes good care of it. However, that doesn’t mean he’s extremely careful with it, because he says it can also be found on the circuit with the car during a track day.
