This smart shirt is claimed to be able to track the heart health of its users

p>RIAU24.COM – The need to look after one’s general well-being has hit everyone like a brick since the Covid-19 pandemic began. Tracking a person’s heart rate and oxygen levels has become part of the daily routine for many people and technology is catching up to society’s fears and demands.

Researchers from the University of Texas in the US have developed a “smart shirt” that can accurately measure a user’s heart rate. Created by scientists at Rice University, this shirt is equipped with conductive carbon fiber nanotubes .

The researchers claim that these fibers are sewn into the fabric and have ECG capabilities. Continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) refers to the process of recording electrical signals from your heart to check its health and potential condition.

The fibers sewn into the shirt serve as the metal wires needed to get a reading on a person’s heart. Pioneered by Lauren Taylor, a Rice University student, a shirt must fit like a good mask in order to give the correct reading.

In a press release, Taylor revealed that they are still working on improving the functionality of the shirt.

To this end, they intend to use a denser patch of carbon nanotube threads to allow more contact with the skin and consequently a more correct reading.

The purpose of the research is outlined in the American Chemical Society’s journal Nano Letters on Aug. 30.

Worried about washing it? No, at least that’s what the researchers say. It appears to be machine washable, soft and flexible due to its “zigzag” stitch pattern. To understand whether it worked, the scientists compared the shirt’s heart data with results from industry-standard strap monitors during the experiment.

They found that the results were more accurate with a carbon nanotube shirt!
