this official render shows what it should look like

Huawei is preparing the second generation of its foldable smartphone, the Mate X2. In a manufacturer’s patent approved on August 14, 2020, we discover several diagrams of a foldable phone, as well as a photorealistic rendering that offers the first glimpse of its design.

After several months of waiting, the first generation Huawei Mate X is available in France since March 2020 in its improved version: the Mate Xs. Those who did not give the skin of the foldable smartphone dearly would have made a mistake. According to the sales figures published at the start of the year, the Mate X was selling very well in China with no less than 100,000 copies elapsed per month. Unsurprisingly, Huawei is working on a new iteration of the device.

Mate X2: Huawei relies on a screen that folds inward

Several leaks already suggested that the Mate X2 will have a different design, with a screen that folds towards inside like the Galaxy Z Fold 2. The Let’s Go Digital site has spotted a Huawei patent filed in May 2019 which has just been approved by the Chinese intellectual property office. The document describes a foldable smartphone and includes several diagrams including a very realistic rendering of the device.

Let’s Go Digital therefore did not need to indulge in its usual exercise of transforming patent designs into 3D rendering. The Huawei Mate X2 could share a form factor that is broadly similar to its predecessor, but with several upgrades. He would embark to begin a stylus called M Pen. As a reminder, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 doesn’t have a stylus contrary to what was initially announced. Huawei could thus play on this significant advantage.

The two devices share similarities, including the way the screen folds inward. However, there are a number of notable differences. For example, a cover screen (external) seems to be missing from the Mate X2 to allow use closer to a smartphone. Instead, Huawei goes for a sidebar that functions as a small control screen, in addition to housing a dual selfie camera at the top. This space should provide access to a number of features, including the display of the time and notifications.

As with the Mate Xs, the thickness of the sidebar slightly exceeds the rest of the frame when the screen is unfolded. This protuberance also serves as housing for the style via a slit available on the lower part. We hope that this new patent foreshadows Huawei’s future foldable smartphone. As a reminder that is expected by the end of the year.
