The clamor was practically unanimous on the part of the main affected. And finally, it will be a reality. The Government has accepted the request of the Generalitat – urged by dozens of municipalities in the metropolitan area – to lift the isolation of the city of Barcelona.
For practical purposes, this means that the wall – metaphorical – that until now separated it from the rest of its environment is broken and mobility will again be allowed within the entire health region, which includes the city of Barcelona and the southern and northern metropolitan areas.
With the start of the de-escalation process, at the end of April, the Government of the Generalitat requested that the territorial limits on the basis of which phase changes were decided were the health regions and not the provinces. At that time, the health region of Barcelona was subdivided into three areas: the city -which includes the ten districts that comprise it-, the northern metropolitan area -which includes the territorial area of Barcelonès Nord, Maresme, Vallès Occidental and Vallès Oriental- and the southern metropolitan area – which incorporated Alt Penedès, Baix Llobregat, Garraf and Barcelonès Sud-.
There is an exception within this reunification. Garraf and Alt Penedès are excluded because they go at a different pace and de-escalate faster. While most of the region remains in phase 1, as of Monday, these two areas will advance to phase 2. For this reason, the Government of the Generalitat has asked that these two territories remain on the margin of the rest.
