Stuef is a treasure hunter in his spare time and was one of the hundreds of thousands of Americans who went in search of the treasure chest. Its contents should be worth more than a million dollars.
Fenn had hidden the treasury in the mountains of Sante Fe more than ten years ago. Fenn’s goal was “to get people and children out of the house and behind the screen, and let them search for the treasure together.”

The gold rush was sparked by the CBS Today program, which picked up on Fenn’s story. In the program, Fenn sometimes gave tips that should bring people closer to the treasure.
Stalkers and death threats
When the treasure was found last summer, 89-year-old Fenn said the finder wanted to remain anonymous. “I feared for the safety of my family,” Stuef now writes. “I didn’t remain anonymous because I had something to hide, but because I didn’t want to be a victim of stalkers, death threats and potential kidnapping.”

Stuef has now announced that he is the finder, because otherwise his identity will be revealed by a lawsuit. A woman claims that the 32-year-old student found the treasure by hacking her phone. She has therefore charged Stuef.
The millionaire who hid the treasure died last fall at the age of 90, but his grandson confirms the story to American media. “We wish Jack the best of luck and we hope the other seekers will treat him with the respect he deserves,” he said.
Location remains secret
It remains a secret where exactly Stuef found the treasure. The student wants the place, which was of enormous significance to the millionaire, to remain unknown. The treasure is in a safe in the US state of New Mexico, where it will remain until Stuef sells its contents.
