We know BER, we also know sloppy elections. But at the top of the Berlin embarrassment list has been the lawn of the Olympic Stadium for years. An evergreen of ridicule that is rarely green.
The meadow held five games after it was replaced in November. Hertha BSC doesn’t even complain massively anymore, the visiting teams do that regularly. BVB did it in mid-December, now 1. FC Köln noticed it after their 3-1 victory. FC trainer Steffen Baumgart: “The lawn is unworthy of Berlin.” He’s right!
In this stadium the field had no chance to recover in the weather. That may still count as a selective argument. But the problem is more fundamental and much older. Since the renovation of the Olympic Stadium with the large roof, around 17 years ago, the green has not received enough light. In addition, the playing area is 20 meters below the local ground level.
Own stadium, own lawn
Olympiastadion GmbH has never found a general solution to the general problem. Only a new lawn is rolled out over and over again. This is messing about. Maybe try a hybrid lawn like in Russia? Maybe artificial UV light for the blades of grass? There are enough approaches. Now the lawn is exchanged again.
The irony of the matter is: The Senate, as the owner, involuntarily provides an argument that Hertha BSC urgently needs its own stadium – with its own lawn.
