This is… Spartiates – The repeated independences and Mitsotakis announcement – 2024-04-16 09:40:51

Delicate balances prevail among the Spartans after their independence Dionysis Valtogiannis, a relative of the goldsmith Konstantinos Barbarousis. The departure of the Aitoloakarnania MP came to be added to those of Yiannis Dimitrokallis and Giorgos Manousos, with the party’s KO now numbering seven MPs and only three independences away from dissolution. Following in the footsteps of Dimitrokallis and Manousos, Dion. Valtogiannis attacked Vassilis Stigas, attributing to him the responsibility for the legal adventures of the Spartans that led to the “deforestation” of their parliamentary group.

“It is impossible to stay in K.O. “Spartans” under the leadership of the president, Mr. Stiga, who, after his unfounded and unsubstantiated complaints, essentially became the reason for my criminal prosecution,” Dion noted in his letter to the Speaker of the Parliament. Valtogiannis regarding the statements of V. Stiga who spoke of “Don Corleone”, “Greek mafia” and interventions from “extra-parliamentary centers”, photographing the convicted Nazi Ilias Kasidiaris.

As reported by the remaining MPs of the party, the departure of Valtogiannis will be the last, since those who remained will not follow in the footsteps of those who joined the category of independent MPs, who reached eight. At the same time, the same sources objected to “political and media interests” who – according to their assessment – are trying to expel them from the Parliament, characterizing the prime minister’s recent statements during his interview with Ant1 as “brutal interference in the work of the Supreme Court” .

Operation “Gathering”

After the commitment of Kyriakos Mitsotakis that the ND will file a memorandum against the participation of the Spartans in the upcoming European elections, at the same time trying to win the consent of the opposition for this initiative, V. Stigas went to the floor of the Parliament in an attempt to give a rallying signal in the remaining KO.

“All of Greece heard the despicable statements of the prime minister who dared to tell the democratic channel Ant1 that the ND will object to the Spartans not going down to the European Parliament. Do you find it reasonable? Do you find it democratic? Please tell us when in the parliamentary annals of the country a legally elected party and within the parliament has been banned from entering the European elections. What we have; Dictatorship;” he wondered in order to respond to the words of Mr. Mitsotakis, whom he compared to Amin Dada who “held elections, took 99% and 1% had “eaten” them”.

In high tones and with anti-systemic rhetoric aimed at specific constituencies, the president of the Spartans also accused the other opposition parties – except for two of them, which he did not name – of “underground routes and collusions”, while from his target the media did not escape either.

However, about the snuffbox he was frugal. V. Stigas downgraded the prosecutions of the MPs who were elected with the party to a simple “misdemeanor”, posing the convenient questions: “What is the crime of the Spartans?” Are you seeing Nightmares everywhere? Do you see conspiracies everywhere? Do you see forwards everywhere? What do you see, anyway, that the Greek people don’t see?”

In closing, he praised the “manly stance of Nikitas Kaklamanis who said that he disagrees with the persecution of the Spartans” and asserted that “those of us who are left guarding Thermopylae are not going to take a single step back”.

Leadership appearance

Suspicions and questions were raised by the position of Michalis Gavgiotakis, as – as was commented by his colleagues – the party’s member of parliament proceeded with a leadership appearance. “You never know, it might be my last speech,” he initially said, giving the impression that he would be the next to become independent, something that was not confirmed.

Continuing in the first person, the MP from Heraklion argued that he defends “the voices and values” of those who voted for him, he attacked the anarchists and the extra-parliamentary Left, but also the media that “call for blood”. “We, the Spartans, have an obligation to defend ourselves with purity and honesty. As for me personally, I will not apologize so much for the malicious actions and reasons of the evil ones as for the unacceptable silence and attitude of well-intentioned and honest people and colleagues” he concluded, troubling several members of the KO.

The four scenarios

In any case, if the electoral court accepts the objections filed by PASOK politicians and declares the Spartans disqualified, then the Supreme Special Court will be asked to decide in favor of one of the following options:

  • Each seat should be given to the first candidate of the party that had the largest unallocated balance per electoral district.
  • The court to decide the proportional distribution of the electoral percentage received by the Spartans to the other parties.
  • Recalculation of the parties’ electoral shares after subtracting the 243,922 votes received by the Spartans. In all three scenarios, a parliamentary domino is expected to emerge, affecting the seats of already sitting members of parliament.
  • It cannot be ruled out that repeat elections will be called in all the twelve constituencies in which Spartan MPs were elected. This is in line with the precedent of the repeated elections in 1992 in the Second Athens to fill the seat of Dimitris Tsovolas, a possibility that is judged by lawyers as the choice that is best in line with the constitution and leaves no room for questioning the popular will.
