This is how seven film directors reflect their adolescence

  • Great filmmakers have chronicled his youth, which would determine his passage through this life

  • Oscar-nominated Thomas Anderson’s ‘Licorice Pizza’ and Sorrentino’s ‘Was the Hand of God’ are two recent examples of nostalgia

  • In the video, more films that tell a story whose resemblance to reality is amazing

The great filmmakers of all time have been aware of the addiction that societies of the last 70 years have to nostalgia. For this reason, many of them have not wanted to miss the opportunity and chronicle that youth that would determine their passage through this life.

‘Licorize Pizza’, by Paul Thomas Anderson or ‘It was the hand of God’, by Paolo Sorrentino – which are competing at the Oscars in the categories for Best Picture and Best Foreign Language Film respectively – are the latest exercises in nostalgia. Both go back to adolescence, the one they saw or the one they lived through. In the video, other tapes with amazing similarities with the youth of their authors.

Nostalgia on the screen

nostalgia. It was invented by a doctor John Hofer, In XVII century. He needed a word to describe the ailment suffered by Swiss soldiers after long stays away from home. The concept, therefore, referred to the longing to return in space, not in time.

Little by little, all those geographical relationships disappeared to become a temporary condition, being the melancholy languishing for an idyllic time (or not) of one’s own life. The emotion of a few centuries ago could be cured, this one is not. It was only possible to travel in time until the cinema flourished. The cinematography is able to recreate a reality – which would be tangible, if not hidden by a screen – present and future, but above all past, better than any other form of art.

portraits of youth

Anderson returns again and again to the San Fernando Valley. Several of his films are set in that outlying area of Los Angeles. ‘Licorice Pizza’ evokes a string of 70s records. The story tells the adventures of Alana and Gary in a Californian neighborhood of the working class. The portrait is delusional, almost surreal, as is the adolescent stage. Euphoric or distressed they try to find themselves, be accepted by others and experience the impossibleWhether it’s drugs, sex, or rock & roll. They also fall in love, of course. Does it ring a bell?

For his part, Sorrentino had accustomed us to stories centered on older people. But, the filmmaker felt the need to return to his youth with the excuse of talking about a Maradona match. It happens in Naples, land of the director, and art saves the life of the protagonist, Fabietto, after a terrible misfortune. The autobiographical overtones in this film are clear: “My adolescence ended with the death of my parents. I’m still stuck on that day,” the Italian artist confessed after the premiere on Netflix.

Because the transition to adulthood one can do it all at once. Or on the contrary, not wanting for anything in the world to cross that line that separates a young man from maturity: “You want to stay in the republic of adolescence, where feeling has primacy and pain is beautiful”as the British actor, director and writer recounted in a letter he sent to his teenage self.
