This is how Netanyahu can stop a new government – VG

The new Israeli government can be overthrown even before it starts if Benjamin Netanyahu were to make “one last little point”, according to an Israeli analyst.

To VG, the renowned Israeli commentator and political analyst Akiva Eldar explains how he envisions that Benjamin Netanyahu can put sticks in the wheels of the political constellation that was formed, solely to get rid of Netanyahu as Israel’s prime minister.

– To say that this unnatural partnership will be able to collapse at any moment, is not to exaggerate. It will only take one last point from Netanyahu’s side, then he will stop the formation of a Naftali Bennett government. Bibi Netanyahu may retire. Then Likud, Israel’s largest party, will elect a new leader. If that happens, a pure right-wing government will be formed with Likud at the helm again, Akiva Eldar believes.

Several Israeli media reported on Thursday that they already have one of the seven MPs who represent Naftali Bennetts part, withdrew its support for the government project.

Another from the party is considering resigning and will oppose the formation of a government in which the Arab-Israeli party of Mansour Abbas is represented.

– A government where a single vote can overthrow it will not last long. But anything can happen, this is Israel, you know, says Israeli political analyst Gideon Levy to VG.

– The pressure from the strong settler movement for a possible Naftali Bennett government to expand the illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank is great. The dissatisfaction from the same milieu against an Arab party joining the government is similarly great. More miracles are needed here, says Levy.

– This is mainly a right-wing government that replaces a right-wing government. This is not a real change in Israeli policy. Therefore, there is no reason to rejoice, neither here in Israel nor in the Western world.

– We will experience that a possible foreign minister Yair Lapid will travel around the world, be photographed with world leaders, and charm everyone who desperately wants Israeli policy to change. It’ll be an illusion of the kind Shimon Peres created in his time as Israel’s face outward, says Gideon Levy.
