The 9 euro ticket allows you to travel by bus and train for 9 euro per month. Popular routes such as Hamburg – Berlin and Cologne – Munich are also possible.

Cologne – Local and regional public transport by bus and train can still be used nationwide for three months for just € 9 per month until August 31st. That 9 euro ticket it is part of a large federal government aid package and is aimed at making buses and trains more attractive to people, especially given high fuel prices. At the same time, the 9-euro ticket also opens up unimaginable possibilities for long journeys to Germany. Because even the most popular routes, such as Hamburg – Munich or Berlin – Colony it can be used suddenly for only 9 euros a month. Especially practical: the price includes local buses and trains from the respective cities.

The 9 euro ticket was introduced on June 1st and is valid for three months, i.e. until August 31st. With the ticket you can use all buses and trains of regional and local transport in Germany. There is an exception for Regional trains operated by DB Fernverkehr operate. In these the 9 euro ticket is usually not valid. Long distance traffic, such as ICE or IC, is not included German train.

But even with regional trains, very long distances can be covered nationwide. If you have no problems with train travel or multiple changes, you can cover long distances for very little money for three months starting in June. If you want to go from Cologne to Munich on the cheap monthly ticket, you can do it in about nine and a half hours if you use local transport only. There are four changes along the way.

9 euro ticket: from Cologne to Berlin

In about nine to ten hours you can also get from Cologne to Berlin by public transport. Many different routes are possible here. The fastest journey takes 8:40 hours, but there are also seven changes, which could be stressful under certain circumstances. A little more pleasant: with just three changes, you can reach Berlin from Cologne in 9:43 hours.

9 euro ticket: From Cologne to Hamburg

If you prefer to travel from Cologne to Hamburg, you can do it in just over six hours using local transport. With three changes, the journey from the cathedral city to the Hanseatic city is possible in about 6:20 hours.

The popular Munich – Berlin route can also be covered with the 9 euro ticket. It takes about nine hours by local transport and is possible with only three changes.

From south to north? This is also possible with the 9 euro ticket. However, the connection from Munich to Hamburg requires patience and sufficient stamina. The journey takes about twelve hours. There are only four transfers.

A trip from Munich to NRW? Cologne can be reached from the Bavarian capital by public transport in about 8:35 hours. However, there are five changes on this path:

The shortest connection between the four megacities in Germany is between Berlin and Hamburg. The Hanseatic city can be reached from the capital by public transport in just over four hours. There are three changes along the way:

As in the opposite example, there are several options for getting from Berlin to Cologne by public transport. All take between eight and a half to nine and a half hours, with three or seven changes. There are also minimal changes on the route from Berlin to Cologne via Magdeburg, Braunschweig and Bielefeld.

The Berlin – Munich route can also be reached by local transport in just under nine hours. Oktoberfest starts on September 17, 2022, a good two weeks after the expected end of the 9-euro ticket, but there are also plenty of reasons for a trip to the Bavarian capital in the summer. The Berlin – Munich route can be covered with three changes.

About Bremen, Osnabrück and Duisburg the Hamburg – Cologne route is also easily accessible by regional trains. This trip is possible in just over six hours with three changes.

Hamburg – Berlin can also be reached in the opposite direction in just over four hours with a 9 euro ticket. With three changes, the route passes through Uelzen, Stendal and Rathenow.

Last but not least, more patience is needed for the connection from Hamburg to Munich. Similar to the other direction, this journey by public transport takes approximately twelve hours.

9 euro ticket: do you need a new ticket for each month?

Yes. The 9 euro ticket is valid for June, July or August. If you want to travel by bus and train at a reduced price in August, you need to buy a new 9 euro ticket on August 1st.
