The president of Spanish football La Liga criticized the high spending of English Premier League clubs in the winter transfer period. Javier Tebas even stated that “the British market is doped”.

He particularly pointed to London’s Chelsea, which was part of almost half of the transfers in the highest English football competition. It spent over 200 million euros, i.e. more than all the clubs from the elite competitions in Spain, Italy, Germany and France combined.

“The Premier League has lost several billion pounds in recent years. It’s all financed by patrons, in this case from the US, who financially cover the losses. This cannot happen in the Spanish or German league, especially in these two,” said Tebas. He also noted that in Spain they strictly control economic sustainability by not allowing “covering barbarically high losses and that makes a difference in the football transfer market”.

Tebas also admitted that English clubs have higher turnovers, but according to him, the difference compared to other competitions is not that big. “It is quite dangerous that the market is doped or inflated, it has been happening especially in Europe in recent years. It can threaten the sustainability of the entire European football,” thinks the leader of La Liga.

The goal of the head of the highest Spanish football competition was to reduce the dominance of the Premier League. However, he stated that “buying players at the prices offered by the Premiership shows all the signs of inflationary buying.” Tebas also said that the Spanish league is still doing well, recalling that there were two Champions League semi-finalists from La Liga last season. He added that Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema (Real Madrid) and Gavi (FC Barcelona) are active in Spain as a Golden Boy award winner.
