Thirty minutes earlier by train in Berlin: “Half an hour is good, faster would be even better”

The train ride from Amsterdam to Berlin has been shortened by thirty minutes from today. Instead of six hours and twenty minutes on the train, you will now only be there for five hours and fifty minutes. But the NS is not yet sure whether this will always work: “As NS, we cannot guarantee that we will arrive in Berlin within six hours, there is still a lot of work going on around this route.”

Conductors of the Amsterdam-Berlin – AT5 route

NS, ProRail and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management today presented the faster route from Amsterdam to Berlin. Three adjustments have made it possible to shorten the train journey. A number of stops have been removed from the route in both the Netherlands and Germany. In addition, a new section of track has been constructed at Oldenzaal and the most important change: a new locomotive. This means that there is no longer any need to change locomotives during the route. “The change had to be made because the voltage on the overhead line in Germany is different than in the Netherlands.”

“We are here at the beginning of open heart surgery for the next 10 years”

Wouter Koolmees – Director of NS

A number of travelers on the Amsterdam – Berlin route say that the thirty minutes is a bonus for them, but that it does not change their choice to take the train. “If I go to Berlin by train for an appointment, I sacrifice two working days. That half an hour more or less does not change that.” Another traveler says: “Half an hour is good, faster would be even better. Last Wednesday I was still four hours late on this route.”

Sustainable travel

According to Wouter Koolmees, director of the NS, this change, together with work and changes in the coming years, should ensure that travelers to and from Berlin more often travel by train instead of by car. “We’re basically at the beginning of open-heart surgery for the next decade,” he says. “Five hours and fifty minutes is a significant time saving for our traveler, making it an attractive alternative to the car, for example.”

The time savings today were a bit disappointing – the train was delayed by 21 minutes.
