Third mandate for the governors, it is a clash between the League and the Democratic Party: what you need to know

The League is preparing a new coup for the third term for the governors. Having failed the blitz in the commission, the Northern League tries again in the Chamber. “We are considering re-presenting the amendment in the Chamber”, says the vice-president of the Constitutional Affairs commission and senator of the League Paolo Tosato, speaking to journalists. Although, he admits, “it is obvious that the vote will hardly be different from what emerged in the commission”: “We, however, maintain the point on this measure or possibly on future measures that will arrive in the Chamber or in the commission”, relaunches Tosato. And he tries to lend a hand to the Democratic Party. In the commission the majority had isolated the League and only Italia viva supported the measure, while Action did not participate in the vote: in total there were 4 votes in favour, one abstention and 16 against, including the Dems themselves.

Now, according to Tosato, the news “is the lively debate within the Democratic Party” which in the commission voted against the third mandate only to then record the discontent of governors and mayors of the party, starting from Stefano Bonaccini. “We will see which position will prevail. That of the local administrators or that of the national secretariat of the party?”, provokes Tosato.

The Democratic Party, however, immediately puts its hands forward. The Dem groups of the Chamber and Senate met this morning to discuss the Elections decree. PD secretary Elly Schlein is not present at the meeting. “We reiterate our position already expressed in the commission”, states the group leader in the Senate, Francesco Boccia, who however announces: “Unlike in the commission, we will present some amendments to the text and a request for an excerpt which means that we are asking for a separate discussion on the Consolidated Law on local authorities. We will present 4 amendments: a couple that concern the vote of non-residents given that the majority has limited this possibility only to students, one on gender equality in the lists, one that deletes the part of the text on the number of mandates for mayors under 5000 inhabitants and to the mayors of municipalities with 5,000 to 15,000 inhabitants. And an agenda, which we will prepare together with Chiara Bragain agreement with the party and with the working group decided by the management, which asks to then face an ad hoc, overall discussion on the reform of local authorities”.
