third day without any local case, “a hope for the world”

China has not recorded any new cases of locally-sourced coronavirus infection on Saturday for the third consecutive day, but health officials have reported 41 imported cases additional, a daily record.

In total, the number of cases “imported” from abroad now stands at 269.

To prevent these people from ending up in the wild and relaunching an epidemic largely contained in China, the authorities now impose quarantine anyone arriving on Chinese soil.

Compared with mid-February, when there were thousands of new infections every day, the contagion was practically stopped in China, the country where the epidemic started.

China has identified a total of more than 81,000 infected people, including only 6,013 are still sick, according to health authorities.

The death toll has also dropped significantly, with seven deaths reported on Saturday, all in Hubei province, the epicenter of the epidemic.

A serious “reversible” situation

Italy, with more than 4,000 dead, has now significantly surpassed China in the number of deaths from the new coronavirus (3,255).

The World Health Organization (WHO) has hailed the efforts on Friday to stem the epidemic in Wuhan, the big city in the center of the country, where the coronavirus appeared in December.

“Wuhan gives hope to the rest of the world by showing that even the most serious situation is reversible,” said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

More than 250,000 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus worldwide, and more than 11,000 have died.
