Thinkpad X1 Fold: Lenovo’s folding notebook comes with Windows 10X

Not only Microsoft will launch a foldable notebook with Windows 10X in 2020. Lenovo also showed the Thinkpad X1 Fold once again at the electronics fair CES 2020 in Las Vegas. The device is already known since autumn 2019, however, it was assumed to run with normal Windows 10. In addition to Windows 10X, the form factor is now also known: the 13.3-inch panel has a 4: 3 format and a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels. A touchscreen and a pen digitizer are integrated. The 4: 3 ratio is popular with tablets and was established by Apple’s iPad in this market.

The Windows 10 X foldable has a battery with 50 watt hours, which is quite large for this form factor. The runtime should be relatively long, especially since Lenovo also Intel’s Lakefield installed as processor. This upcoming chip combines four rather weak atomic cores (Tremont) and a powerful single core (Sunny Cove) on a die. Depending on the workload, the energy-efficient smaller or the more powerful large core should work. A 1 TB NVMe SSD and 8 GB LPDDR4X RAM also fit into the foldable device. It is unlikely that the memory can be expanded or replaced. The SSD is an M.2-2242 card. In principle, this should also be exchangeable.

The X1 Fold has two USB Type-C ports, one with 3.2 Gen2 speed and Displayport compatibility. A SIM card reader for connecting to the mobile data network is also possible – optionally with a 5G modem from Qualcomm. The tablet is relatively heavy at 999 grams – carrying case included. The brightness of 300 cd / m² could be too low in some situations.

Although the X1 Fold has already been described in detail, Lenovo has not yet announced a price. The tablet is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2020.
