Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen8: Lenovo brings 6-core Ultrabook to Europe

Lenovo has announced the Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen8 at the electronics fair CES 2020. The 14-inch ultrabook follows that Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen7 from last year, more precisely the Gen8 largely corresponds to that Silent upgrade from autumn 2019. However, this version was released in EMEA-Room never published, which is why the Ultrabook is an innovation for Europeans.

With around 323 x 218 x 15 mm, Gen7 and Gen8 practically do not differ, the connections are identical: Lenovo installs a Kensington eyelet on the right, a USB 3.0 Type-A port at the front and the power button with fingerprint sensor. The cooling air outlet is also here instead of under the display. On the left there are two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a proprietary Gigabit Ethernet connection, a USB 3.0 Type-A socket, an HDMI 1.4 output and a 3.5 mm jack. A (micro) SD card reader is missing again.

When it comes to the display, Lenovo leaves it up to the user to choose one of five IPS panels: there is a 1080p version with touch at 400 cd / m², and a matte with 400 cd / m² and a matte with Privacy Guard coating at 500 cd / m². There is also a matt 1440p diplay with 400 cd / m² and a 4K touch panel with 500 cd / m² and Dolby Vision. At least with the Gen7, the HDR monitor unfortunately reflects very strongly. The 720p webcam with a mechanical shutter (think shutter) sits in the upper display frame.

The trackpoint with the three dedicated mouse buttons has not changed, and the clickpad is identical. The two-level white backlit chiclet keyboard has modified F-keys: Hotkeys are located on F9 to F11 to accept voice or video chats, hang up and mark favorites.

While the Gen7 is only sold in Europe with Intel’s 8th Gen (Whiskey Lake U), the Gen8 with Intel’s 10th Gen (Come Lake U) fitted. In addition to a dual-core and two quad-core chips with a bit more CPU clock, a Hexacore model is also available. Although the chips support up to 32 GB of LPDDR4X-2933 memory, Lenovo soldered a maximum of 16 GB to LPDDR3-2133. The background is that WHL-U and CML-U fit in the same BGA1528 version, but for LPDDR4X the mainboard should have undergone major changes. Lenovo – like most manufacturers – apparently did not want to spend this effort.

M.2-2280 SSDs are inserted into the Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen8 as a permanent storage medium. Users have the choice between various NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4 models from 256 GB to 2 TB. For wireless connectivity there is an Intel 9560-AC for ac-WLAN and Bluetooth 5 or an Intel AX201 for ax-WLAN and also Blueooth 5 as well as an optional LTE modem. The battery holds 51 watt hours as usual, whereby the model with low-power 400 nits panel has the longest runtime. The Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen8 should be available in the second quarter of 2020.
