A fire raged in an empty building on the Handelskade in Deventer tonight. Thick plumes of smoke were visible above the building. The fire brigade quickly got the fire under control.
The fire service initially scaled up to a large fire. For this, the unit from Deventer received assistance from fire trucks from Diepenveen and Zutphen. In the end, the fire turned out to be not too bad and the fire brigade was soon able to give the signal fire under control.
It is unclear exactly how the fire started. The building is empty awaiting demolition. Soon work will start in the street for a new construction project. Offices, student housing, social housing, catering and owner-occupied apartments will be built on the Handelskade.
According to the fire service, the building is poorly closed and squatters or loiterers are often present. Although no one was found now, there was some rubbish on fire on the fourth floor. The fire service therefore does not rule out arson.
