SAN ANTONIO – Hundreds of migrants arrive daily at the San Antonio Airport seeking political asylum, according to the San Antonio Department of Human Services.
Roland Martínez, a spokesman for the agency, said that this is not the first time that migrants seeking political asylum have used the city as a transition point.
The spokesperson added that the arrival of migrants increased this week and that between 100 and 500 people arrive at the airport daily.
“There are adults, there are families. Some come alone. It’s a variety of ages that are coming to San Antonio, “he said.
According to Martínez, most of the migrants are from Central America or Haiti, although some arrive from Venezuela.
“There in Venezuela you cannot live. You survive because the salary is $ 3 to $ 4 and a carton of eggs is worth $ 3. You work a month just to buy a carton of eggs. Imagine, who survives like this? ”Commented an anonymous traveler.
Although hotel rooms are available for those who need assistance during the night, the spokesperson said some migrants choose to sleep at the airport for fear of missing their flight the next day.
