The Court of Appeals today issued a judgment to order a new trial against Pablo Casellas Toro for the murder of his wife Carmen Paredes.
“The convictions for the three serious crimes are null and void, and a new trial is ORDERED,” establishes the judgment of the appeals panel composed of its president, judge Birriel Cardona, and judges Bermúdez Torres and Pagán Ocasio .
Casellas Toro was sentenced to serve 109 years in prison, after a jury found him guilty of the crimes of first-degree murder, destruction of evidence, and violation of Article 5.15 of the Puerto Rico Weapons Law.
The determination arises in response to the decision of the United States Maximum Forum that the verdict rendered by an impartial jury against a person charged with a serious crime must be unanimous.
