They launch the new electronic DNI with chip and QR code | Can the current document continue to be used?

The National Registry of Persons (Renaper), dependent on the Ministry of the Interior, launched a new electronic DNI with innovative features and functionalities, which, in addition, complies with “the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) of the United Nations to guarantee “the best international standards in terms of technology and security of identification credentials.”

The new Argentine identity document was made official this Thursday through the publication of provision number 1255 of Renaper, published in the Official Gazette, it will use a chip and a QR code that will allow its validation.

The Government described that the new electronic DNI “will be laser printed on polycarbonateincorporating technical physical security measures to improve security, facilitate visual verification e prevent its falsification; “At the same time, polycarbonate is a more resistant and durable material.”

“This work, which involves new technology, equipment, supplies and design, was announced at the opening of sessions of the 2021 Congress by the President of the Nation, Alberto Fernández,” the ministry highlighted.

In that sense, he maintained that this novelty in the Argentine credential follows the guidelines of the ICAO (of the United Nations), which “in its standard 9303 Since 2015, it has been recommended that the material of the credential be polycarbonate and carry a chip.just like this new document, and that at the same time the design is renewed at most every 10 years (the current one is from 2012), with the purpose of optimizing security and avoiding fraud.”

For this reason, the Ministry of the Interior maintained that “Now Argentina joins the decision adopted by many countries, regarding the implementation of the best international standards in terms of technology and security of identification credentials which, for example, in our region, with the exception of Venezuela, has already been implemented (or is in process) in all countries: Chile in 2013 and Uruguay in 2015, as well as Paraguay, Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia.”

At the same time, it is clarified that “outside the region, polycarbonate electronic documents have been issued for more than twenty years, including a large number of countries such as Spain (since 2006), the United States, Germany, France, Austria, Ireland, El Salvador, Panama, Costa Rica, Estonia, Cameroon, Senegal, United Arab States, Australia, among many others.”

“Likewise, some of the new digital functionalities, as is common in this type of projects, will be implemented as digital applications and complementary technological infrastructure are developed.”

When will they start issuing the new DNI?

From the Ministry of the Interior they indicated that “the Renaper You are now in a position to issue the new DNI with the new equipment assembled in their factory”.

That is “in the coming days, The staggered issuance of new documents will begin, “anticipating the total replacement to the new design during the second quarter of next year”.

Meanwhile, in parallel, printing of current documents will continue.

Can the current DNI continue to be used?

The Ministry of the Interior clarified that as of the entry into force of this measure, the Renaperwill continue to issue current copies, which will have the same validity as the electronic DNIuntil all the available inputs with which the current DNI are made are used and the issuance of the new document is progressively implemented throughout all of Argentina.”

New designs and functions of the DNI
