NEW YORK – Nicki Minaj’s mother is suing the Long Island man who was accused of fatally running over the rapper’s father and then fleeing the scene. The suspect was arrested in mid-February.
The $ 150 million civil lawsuit was filed Friday on behalf of Carol Maraj, her attorneys Ben Crump and Paul Napoli announced.
Robert Maraj was walking down a road in Mineola on Long Island last month when he was hit by a hit-and-run car, Nassau County Police said. Maraj was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next day.
“Charles Polevich was not only irresponsible and negligent in running over Robert Maraj, but he was more concerned with running away and hiding than seeking help for the man he injured,” lawyers for Nicki Minaj’s mother said in a statement. “We seek to hold Polevich accountable for his reckless actions and achieve justice for the victim’s widow.”
Polevich’s attorney shared a statement con USA TODAY and called the amount mentioned in the lawsuit “shocking to say the least and I don’t think it is in any way reasonable.”
“Polevich has expressed empathy and condolences to the Maraj family. While the civil lawsuit is not unexpected, the criminal charges pending against Mr. Polevich are unrelated to the civil case. It has yet to be determined whether negligence was involved in the accident. or the degrees of negligence, ”said Marc Gann, the defendant’s attorney.
Nicki Minaj, 38, was born in Trinidad and grew up in Queens County. So far he has not made any public statement about his father’s death.
