They convene an extraordinary session of the National Assembly of People’s Power

On May 25, an extraordinary session of the National Assembly of People’s Power will be held, convened by the Council of State to analyze the economic situation of the Island.

“The Council of State, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic in Article 122, paragraph d), agreed to arrange for the celebration of the Second Extraordinary Session of the National Assembly of People’s Power, in its X Legislature, for the day May 25, 2023 at 9:00 a.m., at the Palacio de las Convenciones”, indicates an official statement shared by the official Cubadebate.

According to the aforementioned media, the extraordinary session will touch on various topics, including:

  • The update on the economic situation of the country.
  • The Social Communication bill.
  • The proposal of the Legislative schedule of the X Legislature.
  • The constitution of the permanent work commissions of the National Assembly of People’s Power.
  • The constitution of the Parliamentary Friendship Groups of the National Assembly of Popular Power.

This session is convened in the midst of one of the worst economic crises that the Island has experienced in recent years, which is added to the severe fuel shortage that has made daily activities in the country difficult.

The Castro government also recognized this week that the island is going through a precarious health situation, this during the annual balance of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) corresponding to 2022.

According to the figures revealed at that event, which took place on Monday at the Palace of the Revolution, less than 40% of the ambulances it has operate in Cuba. Similarly, they pointed out that all the emergency vehicles they obtained during 2022 were exclusively those donated by other nations.

The extraordinary session will take place after the protests in Guantánamo

The extraordinary session will touch on the topic of the Social Communication Law, which is aimed at further controlling what the press publishes in the country.

The purpose of this law is for the media to promote “consensus and national unity around the Homeland, the Revolution and the Communist Party.”

However, the fact that this law is going to be discussed after the demonstrations were registered in Caimanera last weekendsuggests that the government is desperate to prevent news like this from ever being mentioned in Cuban newspapers.
