What the iFixit people discovered
Perhaps the most interesting confirmation iFixit came to is that the second-generation iPhone SE is a hybrid that has components from various other devices.

Let’s see the detail:
- A13 Bionic SoC with a third generation neural motor, directly from the iPhone 11 / Pro / Max.
- 4.7 ”Retina HD display with 1334 × 750 (326 ppi) resolution, true tone, and support for a wide color gamut (P3), as seen on the iPhone 8.
- 12MP to ƒ / 1.8 wide-angle rear camera, and a 7MP ƒ / 2.2 front camera, allegedly borrowed from the iPhone 8 or XR.
- Gigabit-class LTE with 2 × 2 MIMO and 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 with 2 × 2 MIMO + Bluetooth 5.0 + NFC, as found on iPhone 11.
- Home button with 2nd generation Touch ID sensor: again coming back from iPhone 8.
- As for the battery, the capacity is the same as in the iPhone 8, sounding at 6.96 Wh. That’s slightly higher than the original SE’s 6.21 Wh, and much lower than the iPhone 11’s (much larger) 11.91 Wh.
One of the conclusions that iFixit makes is that “we are quite excited about Apple Frankensteined with this phone that paired with parts from previous models. Spare parts should be easier to find, and reusing existing manufacturing lines produces less overall waste. ”
Negative things about an iPhone SE
- IP67 seals complicate repair, but make the need for difficult liquid damage repairs less likely.
- While the overall build is fairly easy to repair, you will still need up to four different types of drivers for many repairs.
- The fragile glass back is not practical to replace.
