They celebrate the Independence of Panama in New York; They raised the flag in Manhattan

With typical dances that showed Canalero folklore, music, emotional speeches and a flag raising, This Tuesday the 202 years of the Independence of Panama were celebrated in New York.

The event, organized by the Panamanian consulate in New York, headed by Consul Elías Levy, took place at Bowling Green Park, in Lower Manhattan.

Mayor Eric Adams attended the event along with Vice Mayor Ana Almanzar, commissioners, other Latin American consuls and members of the Panamanian community in the Big Apple.

“The Panama Canal connects the world and New York City’s vibrant Panamanian community connects the five boroughs”Adams said.

“They are the backbone of the working class of the largest city in the world and we are very proud to celebrate the 202 years of Panamanian independence,” he said.

During cultural activities, The flag of Panama was raised next to that of the United States.

Independence of Panama

In a period of 18 days, between November 10 and 28, 1821, Panama broke the colonial ties that existed between its territory and the Spanish empire, allowing the country to end a colonial era of more than 300 years.

And precisely, on November 28, 1821, through an open town hall in the city, the Independence of Panama from the Spanish government was finally proclaimed. It occurred in Parque Independencia or Catedral in the town of San Felipe.

The archbishop of Panama Fray José Ignacio Duran and the priests Don Juan José Martínez and Don Manuel José Calvo signed the act of independence.

The emancipation movement was supported by Colonel José de Fábrega, known now historically as the Liberator of the Isthmus. He was the main architect of Panamanian independence.
