These teachers who exercise their right of withdrawal

In Seine-Saint-Denis (Île-de-France), the staff of Elsa Triolet college is facing an upsurge in Covid-19 cases. At the same time, teachers deplore a lack of information. Simon Duteuil, history professor and SUD education union member thus noticed an increase in anxiety among his colleagues. “We were at 5 classes yesterday, 6 this morning, I believe 7 this noon (…) it increases hour by hour depending on the protocols that change“, he explains.

The only solution put forward by the teacher while awaiting answers from the government: the right of withdrawal in order to ensure the safety of all. “That is to say: “We will not participate in endangering the population in relation to the Covid“”, he adds. Simon Duteuil thus expects from the government a “strong adaptation“and deplores the lack of listening.

At college Elsa Triolet, the teachers have indeed made proposals to adapt the health protocol. “It is being able to organize half-classes to reduce attendance in classes, to ease the circulation of the virus, but while still allowing students to have access to college, to access catering because it is so important in a territory like ours, that students can continue to go to the canteen“, estimates the professor of history. It is thus a real balancing act to succeed in maintaining a good functioning of the college.”What we see is that today the virus is circulating, it is circulating very, very strongly“, worries the teacher.
