Rheinbahn buses and trains stopped on February 28th. The Rheinbahn is on strike. What alternatives are there for commuters anyway.
Düsseldorf – No agreement in the collective bargaining dispute in the public sector: The Verdi union has therefore announced that it will also expand the strikes in NRW again. On Tuesday (February 28), the Rheinbahn in Düsseldorf was again affected. The Rheinbahn was already on strike on February 9th and 10th. Also on February 28, the new strike is likely to bring public transport in the NRW state capital to an almost complete standstill. However, some buses should still run – and there are other alternatives.
Rheinbahn strike in Düsseldorf: These buses are still driving
As the Rheinbahn has now announced, the strike will affect all subway, tram and most bus lines. This applies not only to Düsseldorf, but to the entire Rheinbahn network, including the Mettmann district, the city of Meerbusch and the connections to Duisburg, Krefeld, Neuss and Ratingen. The Rheinbahn customer centers will also remain closed on Tuesday. The P&R car park Südpark cannot then be used either.
“Despite the strike, the Rheinbahn is trying to make journeys possible on some bus lines. External and subsidiary companies that are also otherwise employed on behalf of the Rheinbahn could take on these services,” the company said. Accordingly, the following lines should probably run at the usual frequency, but not according to the timetable:

Strike at the Rheinbahn in Düsseldorf: S-Bahn as an alternative
What can I do if the bus and train go on strike?
When there is a public transport strike, i.e. when buses and trains stand still, many people without a car quickly have a problem. The way to work can be a real challenge for many employees. In addition, the mobility guarantee does not apply in the event of a strike. Taxi costs cannot be reimbursed by the transport company. 24RHEIN has compiled an overview of the options employees have in the event of a public transport strike.
On the other hand, Deutsche Bahn and other railway companies are not on strike. This means that commuters also have the option of using several S-Bahn lines to get to at least the different parts of Düsseldorf:
- S1: Düsseldorf-Angermund – Düsseldorf Airport Bf – Düsseldorf-Unterrath – Düsseldorf Derendorf – Düsseldorf-Zoo – Düsseldorf-Wehrhahn – Düsseldorf-Hauptbahnhof
- S6: Düsseldorf-Rath-Mitte – Düsseldorf-Rath – Düsseldorf-Derendorf – Düsseldorf-Zoo – Düsseldorf-Wehrhahn – Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof – Düsseldorf-Volksgarten – Düsseldorf-Oberbilk – Düsseldorf-Eller Süd – Düsseldorf Reisholz – Düsseldorf-Benrath – Düsseldorf-Garath – Düsseldorf-Hellerhof
- S8: Düsseldorf-Gerresheim – Düsseldorf-Flingern – Düsseldorf main station – Düsseldorf-Friedrichstadt – Düsseldorf-Bilk – Düsseldorf Völklinger Straße – Düsseldorf-Hamm
- S11: Düsseldorf airport – Düsseldorf-Unterrath – Düsseldorf-Derendorf – Düsseldorf-Zoo – Düsseldorf-Werhahn – Düsseldorf main station – Düsseldorf-Friedrichstadt – Düsseldorf-Bilk – Düsseldorf Völklinger Str. – Düsseldorf-Hamm
- S28: Düsseldorf-Hamm – Düsseldorf-Bilk – Düsseldorf-Friedrichstadt – Düsseldorf Hbf – Düsseldorf-Flingern – Düsseldorf-Gerresheim
- S68: Düsseldorf-Hellerhof – Düsseldorf Garath – Düsseldorf Benrath – Düsseldorf-Reisholz – D-Eller Süd – Düsseldorf-Oberbilk
The Rheinbahn also recommends using the “redy” app. The offers of the mobility partners can be viewed there.
Wage dispute in the public sector: the reason for the next Rheinbahn strike
The background to the warning strike at the Rheinbahn is the wage dispute in the public sector. The Verdi union is demanding a wage increase of 10.5 percent for the employees there, but at least 500 euros. Two rounds of negotiations have already ended without an agreement. In the meantime, the dispute is threatening to escalate and at the same time further strikes are threatening in the coming weeks before the third round of negotiations in Potsdam at the end of March.

Verdi had rejected the employer’s offer last Thursday. “The offer is cheeky,” said Stephanie Peifer, Verdi’s managing director for the Düsseldorf-Rhein-Wupper district. “An increase in salaries only after nine months and only by three percent – that is absolutely disrespectful. Workers are now struggling to pay for the high energy bills and food prices. They need a lot more money now.” (bs) Fair and independent information about what is happening in NRW – subscribe to our free 24RHEIN newsletter here.
