These are the winners of the ‘Innovate’ category

The joint project between Spar and Too Good To Go took the overall win in the third category, ‘Innovate’. Followed by full board in second place and Post AG in third place.

1st place: Spar x Too Good To Go ‘App Surprise Bag’

More than a third of all food around the world ends up in the garbage. This has far-reaching consequences for the environment, because food is produced using a great deal of resources.
Together with Spar, Too Good to Go has developed a solution with an app. Spar is the first supermarket in Austria to use the app across the country to prevent food from being wasted. Because despite careful planning, it is not always possible to foresee whether the last customers will grab a pretzel stick or a roll. Whatever is left over at the end of the day should not be wasted, at Spar it goes in the too-good-to-go surprise bag. Customers can pay for the groceries that are still good but no longer sold in the app at a third of the original price and take them away at the checkout at the end of the day. More than 300,000 surprise bags have been sold since the start of the cooperation and the joint campaign drew attention to the issue of food waste.

2nd place: full board ‘Generationen cafe & Co’

Poverty in old age and loneliness as well as isolation in old age are an increasingly growing problem. There are 620,000 single seniors in Austria, more than a third are affected by poverty in old age. Therefore, full board was launched as a pop-up in 2012. The basic idea of full board is easy to explain: Where’s the best cake? That’s right, at grandma’s!

Pop up at Schwedenplatz

And in the full-board generation café. Grandmas and grandpas bake the best cakes there, earn a little something on top of the meager pension and, above all, are not lonely. Until Corona came and the two full-board locations also had to close. Numerous marketing initiatives were started in order to keep jobs – especially those of grandmothers and grandfathers. Starting with half-board, in which prices were billed according to seat and time and not according to consumption. Which has resulted in a 70 percent increase in per capita sales. As a result, two Buchtel-To-Go pop-up kiosks were opened in Vienna. Or the Backademie – the world’s first grandma online baking school. The whole thing is refined with highly professional marketing, but always with a lot of heart and a wink.

3rd place: Post AG ‘Green Pack reusable package’

Online trade has not only been booming since Corona. But that also means that tons of cardboard are thrown away every day or, ideally, end up in waste paper. The Post AG is therefore testing the use of reusable parcels in online mail order together with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria and five trading partners in the Green Pack project. By expanding the circular economy, emissions and waste can be saved in the industry. In a first step, the most suitable packaging was selected from 40 different types of reusable packaging. For a cost-effective and ecologically sustainable return shipment, only foldable packaging was selected that can be easily returned via letterboxes. These are currently being used by trading partners to increase acceptance among consumers. Special wine packaging is also being tested for this purpose.
The project is scientifically supported by the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. In this way, potential for improvement can be taken up immediately. The first results are promising. Both in terms of practicality and feedback from end consumers, it will hopefully soon be impossible to imagine shipping logistics without reusable packaging.

In addition to the winners still have it Damn Plastic, an (online) shop for plastic-free alternatives and sustainable event consulting, as well as the Westfield Donau Zentrum in cooperation with the Samariterbund made it to the consumer panel. they have one “social market” opened in the shopping center, which is supplied by the in-house dealers and shops and therefore there are no transport routes and little waste is caused.
