There will be no new tram lines before the end of Damien Castelain’s mandate

They were, however, on the program of the transport infrastructure master plan (SDIT), which the president of the European Metropolis of Lille (MEL) had planned to put in place. The five tram lines will not see the light of day by 2026.

There will be no new tram lines by 2026. “In terms of tramways, the average time between feasibility studies and commissioning is generally seven years. The examples of Lyon or Bordeaux are there to remind us ”, assumed Sébastien Leprêtre, vice-president in charge of transport at the MEL, during the metropolitan council of December 18, 2020. However, these famous studies are still far from being launched, as Mediacités has noticed in this article which takes stock of the progress of SDIT. The speech given by Sébastien Leprêtre to elected officials of the “transport, mobility, accessibility” commission is moreover even more direct: “There will not be the start of the start of a new tram line during this mandate. “

New bus lines still on the program

The MEL transport plan envisages the creation of five additional links: Wambrechies – Lille – Seclin, Lille – Loos – Hallennes-lez-Haubourdin, Tourcoing – Roubaix – Hem, and two extensions to Tourcoing and Wattrelos. The routes have already been the source of disputes between certain cities and the Metropolis, reluctant to create lines in their city center.

But if the tramway projects are postponed, all the infrastructure provided for in the SDIT is not for all that put on hold. Because, as Sébastien Leprêtre reminds us: “We would be wrong to limit the SDIT to only tram lines. The public transport development plan, voted in June 2019 for an amount of 2 billion euros, also plans to deploy new “express” bus lines. The total amount of the SDIT amounts to 2 billion euros, of which 1.3 billion is allocated to the creation of the tramway.
