TRIBUN-BALI.COM – This December is the right moment to be able to observe or witness Comet C/2021 (Leonard) which will pass near Earth.
Comet C/2021 A1 (Leonard) is a long-period comet discovered by GJ Leonard at Mount Lemmon Observatory on January 3, 2021 ago.
The comet’s orbital period is 80,000 years with an orbital tilt of 132.68 degrees or moving retrograde.
Researcher at the Space Science Center of the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Andi Princeg said, this comet will pass near Earth on December 12, 2021.
Comet Leonard will pass at its closest distance from Earth as far as 0.233 astronomical units (sa) or 34,857,000 km.
“When it passes near Earth, the comet Leonard’s magnitude reaches +2.1 (data updated December 1, 2021) which indicates that this comet can be seen without using optical aids,” Andi explained to Kompas.com, Wednesday (1/12/2021) .
In general, he said, Comet Leonard can be seen in the morning or at dawn from December 1-11 2021.
On December 12, the comet’s altitude was too low at sunrise to make it difficult to observe.
“Once comet Leonard reached the point closest to Earth, the comet’s visibility changed from morning to afternoon,” he explained.
On December 13, the comet’s altitude was too low at sunset to make it difficult to observe.
