There is Social Jealousy Behind PT GNI’s Deadly Smelter Clash

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The Association of Indonesian Mining Experts (Perhapi) assessed that the clashes that occurred between employees of PT Gunbuster Nickel Industry or PT GNI some time ago were caused by several factors. One of them is the existence of social jealousy by local workers towards GNI’s treatment of foreign workers (TKA).

Perhapi Chairperson Rizal Kasli did not deny that the company employs a fairly large number of foreign workers, namely around 1,300 people or 10% of the total number of workers. This was done because the investors and technology used came from China.

So the company needs foreign workers needed so that construction and operations can go according to plan and go well. This then causes social jealousy.

“Social jealousy is often heard from local workers because of several issues such as the use of unskilled laborers, who should be able to use local workers,” Rizal told CNBC Indonesia, Thursday (26/1/2023).

Next is the issue of salary, facilities and socialization among employees. These things, according to Rizal, are not well mapped and not socialized properly so that there is unrest among the workers.

Even so, Rizal believes the company has submitted a Plan for Using Foreign Workers (RPTKA) to the authorities. So that companies can bring in foreign workers to be employed there.

Previously, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves) would summon PT Gunbuster Nickel Industry (GNI) in the near future. This followed an incident of clashes between employees which eventually claimed two lives.

Deputy for Investment and Mining Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Septian Hario Seto, regretted that there were provocateurs who sparked the violence. The provocateurs have now been secured and will be dealt with according to the law and regulations in force.

“Companies will be summoned and asked to strictly implement ESG Standards and better K3L standards,” Seto told CNBC Indonesia Tuesday (16/1/2023).

According to Seto, Indonesia itself actually has good Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) benchmarks in Sorowako. According to him, this can be used as an example for other companies.

As is known, clashes at PT GNI involving foreign citizens (WNA) and also Indonesian citizens (WNI) or local residents have claimed two lives. Where one person is a foreigner and another person is a local resident.
