In medical and paramedical circles, there is a widespread opinion that, that depression is a condition, a course of vitamin D will help to overcome it. However, the results of a recent and, as it turned out, the largest clinical trial ever conducted showed, that there is no connection between depressive syndrome and vitamin therapy.
Vitamin D is often referred to as the “sunshine vitamin” because it is formed when the skin is exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet light. During the dark, winter months, people develop a mild form of natural deficiency of this vitamin. Associating this circumstance with the fact that a person is more likely to experience depression during the same period, some scientists have suggested that the two factors are related.
If earlier the study of this connection was limited to only small studies of individual patients, this time scientists decided to understand the problem radically. IN included 18 353 people, whose average age was 67 years. Such a large sample allows you to eliminate the factor of chance and make the study much more thorough.
Scientists have studied patients for five years. To do this, they were divided into an active group, which took a daily dose of vitamin D3, and a passive group, which was given a placebo. By the end of the experiment, it turned out that there was no statistical difference between the two groups.
Doctors note that the study has not yet been completed on this. Despite the obvious results, in the future they plan to carry out another work, where the object will be people suffering from both depression and severe vitamin D deficiency. Although it is not able to prevent the development of depression, this vitamin is still indispensable for humans. : it is essential for bone health and proper metabolism. Perhaps ridding the patient of the deficiency of such an important resource will actually help improve his psychological state – but we will not know about this soon.
