There is also a Hungarian Oscar nominee this year

The nominees for the 96th Academy Awards have been announced, and this year there is also a Hungarian nominee: Zsuzsa Mihalek, the designer of the film Poor Couples, was nominated in the best production design category.

According to IMDb, Zsuzsa Mihalek started her career as a decorator in the 1980s, and also worked on the films Csinibaba, Werckmeister harmonies, and Argo. He was a set designer in several productions filmed in Hungary (Atomszőke, Suszter, szabó, baka, kém, Vaksötét). He was also nominated for a BAFTA Award for his work in Poor Couples.

The most recent Hungarian Oscar winner was also a decorator, Zsuzsanna Sipos won jointly with production designer Patrice Vermette for her work in Düne.

Anna Flóra Buda’s animated short film 27, which won prizes in Cannes and Annecy, was not among the candidates.

Thirteen nominations were given to Oppenheimer, eleven to Szegény párá, filmed in Hungary, ten to Megtott vuletok, and eight to Barbie.

At first glance, there are no huge surprises, only smaller ones: the Cannes grand prize winner Anatomy of a Fall was not only nominated in the category of best foreign film, but Sandra Hüller and the screenplay were also nominated. Lily Gladstone (our portrait) and Robert DeNiro from Drowned Flowers were nominated, but Leonardo DiCaprio was not. Barbie’s star (Margot Robbie) and director (Greta Gerwig) were left out. The biopic Nyad was also nominated in two acting categories (Annette Benning and Jodie Foster).
