An extraordinary meeting of a legal commission, which was convened during the break that the deputies took from voting on the update of the budget of the Health Insurance Fund, failed in less than half an hour, as demanded by the deputies of GERB and MRF. Although the representatives of the other political forces were against, the meeting was eventually adjourned due to Iva Miteva’s argument (“There are such people”) that even if the meeting continues and the bills are adopted by a committee, the rules do not allow them to enter Parliament’s program for the next day.
The bill by which the Bureau for Witness Protection was moved from the Prosecutor General to the Ministry of Justice, as well as the bill by which the specialized courts and the prosecutor’s office were closed, had to be discussed at second reading. The texts are defined as priorities by “There is such a people”, “Democratic Bulgaria”, “Stand up. BG! We are coming!” and BSP, and the deputies seem to be trying to hurry with their movement at the last moment, because in the coming days President Rumen Radev is expected to dissolve the 46th National Assembly.
“This is the sixth change at this meeting. Do you really think that legal commissions can be scheduled during the holidays, for which we need at least a few hours,” said Hamid Hamid of the MRF. Atanas Slavov and Nadezhda Yordanova of Democratic Bulgaria responded that the texts had been widely discussed at previous meetings of the legal commission and the differences had been clarified so that the vote could pass quickly.
Hamid Hamid insisted that the Minister of Justice Yanaki Stoilov and again the Chief Prosecutor Ivan Geshev be summoned to the meeting of the commission. Other MPs responded that the work of the commission was so protracted and recalled that the chief prosecutor had already been heard by the legal commission.
“I think this meeting is illegitimate. It is neither the time nor the place to hold it – we are organizing a meeting in five minutes. We are considering the budget of the Health Insurance Fund, which is extremely important,” said Anna Alexandrova from GERB.
“There are three types of people here – some who don’t want this law to happen and have the courage to say it. Others who bully and play a lot in front of the media, and others who have spent weeks at work, including in the previous parliament – on they don’t need ten minutes, they need ten seconds, “said Krum Zarkov of the BSP for Bulgaria, recalling that the bills were also discussed in the previous National Assembly.
“There is no time for this parliament. The time will come for the other. Once promised, defend Geshev’s Bureau and special justice. This would be an honorable position, but don’t bully,” Krum Zarkov told MRF lawmakers.
A new meeting of the legal commission was scheduled for Friday (September 10) at 10 a.m.
