There are 1525 charging points in the Czech Republic, one of which has nine electric cars

New data on the number of charging points and their ratio to operated electric cars result from current data of the Center for Transport Research (CDV), a research organization under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transport. Approximately 13,700 electric cars are now registered in the Czech Republic.

“Approximately two thirds of public charging stations, namely 68 percent, are operated by three energy groups – 39% of stations are operated by ČEZ, 18% by PRE and ten percent by E.ON. Public charging stations are currently operated in the Czech Republic by a total of 69 entities, nine of which are 19 or more stations, ”said CDV Director Jindřich Frič.

However, it is not stated which part consists of fast chargers with direct current and which slow chargers with alternating current. E.g. CEZ’s most common racks offer three charging points – 50kW DC with CCS2 type cable, 50kW DC with CHAdeMO cable and 22kW socket for Mennekes type cable. However, they can charge a maximum of two at a time – one 50kW and 22kW socket.

The gray CCS2 charging connector is used almost exclusively for fast DC charging in today’s electric cars.

In total, according to statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, there are around 7,600 classic filling stations in the Czech Republic, and about 4,000 of them are publicly accessible. The vast majority of them offer traditional fuels, ie petrol and diesel. However, the European Commission has proposed that cars with internal combustion engines should not be sold in the EU at all after 2035. Brussels is thus working to make the fight against climate change more effective.

According to data from the Association of the Automotive Industry and Manufacturers, domestic car manufacturers produced approximately 91,000 electric cars and plug-in hybrids from January to the end of September, which was about 40% less last year for the whole year. Socket cars currently account for 10.9% of the total domestic production of passenger cars, last year it was less than five percent.

This year, the production of cars in the Czech Republic is limited by the lack of chips, due to which approximately 250,000 cars will not be produced. For example, the Octavia in particular is struggling with the Škoda, while the production of Enyaq iV electric cars ran until the current shutdown without restrictions, and there were also smaller restrictions at the Superb. The reason is the higher margins that the carmaker has for these models.

Today, the Transport Research Center also published a survey on charging habits for electric vehicles. “So far, over 230 respondents have participated, of which 84% were owners of battery electric vehicles and 16% were owners of plug-in hybrid vehicles,” said Lukáš Kadula from CDV.

“Approximately 30% of respondents charge battery electric vehicles almost daily at home, less than a tenth of respondents do not charge at all at home, 55% of respondents charge at work. At first glance, the situation is different, but by no means unexpected, in the case of recharging plug-in hybrid vehicles, where more than 70% of respondents recharge almost daily at home, “said Kadula. He added that 37% of operators use electricity produced from a photovoltaic power plant to recharge electric vehicles.

For completeness, CDV also provides data on the number of charging points in history. In 2011 there were 11 of them in the Czech territory, by 2017 their number grew by tens, when there were 286. Since 2018, growth has accelerated – in that year it was 463 points, a year later 754 points and in 2020 already 1278 rechargeable points.
