The Xunta reconsiders the Xacobeo 2021 forced by the covid-19 | Radio Pontevedra

The Xunta de Galicia is rethinking all the Xacobeo21 programming in light of the evidence that the coronavirus pandemic will continue to prevent mass events and large shows.

The Minister of Tourism, Román Rodríguez announced it in Pontevedra, committing that the new program will be presented before the end of the year.

Román Rodríguez made these statements at the inauguration of the expansion of the Pontevedra hostel, which as of this morning has 20 more beds, completing a total of 92 places, although only half can be used due to restrictions against the coronavirus.

The 21-year-old hostel is having a much lower occupancy this year than in previous years. Of the 100,000 pilgrims expected for this year, it will not reach 15,000.

The President of the Association of Friends of the Portuguese Way, Celestino Lores, was very satisfied with this expansion, although he regretted that the coronavirus does not allow them to be at full capacity.

The facilities inaugurated this afternoon cost 198,000 euros, and allowed to build an annex building that has already been baptized as Camellias. It has all the hotel services for pilgrims.

Also present at this inauguration was the mayor of Pontevedra. Miguel Fernández Lores stressed that the Portuguese road is a fundamental economic engine for the city, although this year the impact will be much less due to the pandemic.

In the same act, the Minister of Tourism highlighted that during the summer Galicia was 22 points above the tourist variables with respect to the national average. Román Rodríguez said that our community bet from the first moment on safe and quality tourism and this was reflected in the number of overnight stays during July and August. According to data from the Xunta, rural and coastal tourism increased and reservations in urban hotels decreased.
