The writer-director Vitaliano Trevisan died, he was 61 years old

VICENZA – The writer, actor, director and screenwriter from Vicenza died today 7 January Vitaliano Trevisan. He was born in Sandrigo on 12 December 1960, in recent years he has been divided between his Campodalbero di Crespadoro and a new life in the countryside of the province of Pisa. As a writer he had achieved national success and notoriety with the book The Fifteen Thousand Steps in 2002.

Two months ago, at the end of October, he was discharged from the psychiatry ward of the hospital in Montecchio Maggiore after a hospitalization requested by his partner. “He did it, it seems, for my own good, fears for my mental health,” the writer had said. The dark period, punctuated by some posts on Fb, had alarmed. Today Trevisan’s lifeless body was found in the home of Crespadoro, and on the causes of the tragedy there are some hypotheses including the mix of drugs or even the voluntary gesture.

On 5 November last in «La Repubblica» he had published his testimony «I, a mad treaty without mercy», written following the forced hospitalization, in which Trevisan denounced the conditions in which the patients are.

The carreer

In 2003 he was lead actor and co-writer of the film First love by Matteo Garrone, shot in Vicenza, in competition at the 54th Berlin Film Festival. In 2016 he co-starred in the film Without a trace directed by Gianclaudio Cappai. His plays have been staged by Valter Malosti, Renato Chiocca and Toni Servillo; recently published for Einaudi the Two monologues, namely Oscillations and Solo RH staged in the 2007 edition of the Festival delle Mura by Roberto Herlitzka.

In September 2017, for the production of the Teatro di Roma, one of his texts was included in the collective project Portrait of a nation, in which other Italian playwrights such as Michela Murgia and Marco Martinelli participate together with Trevisan, a project directed by Fabrizio Arcuri.

The condolences

«In the name of the municipal administration – declares The Mayor of Vicenza, Francesco Rucco – I express condolences for the untimely death of Vitaliano Trevisan, an eclectic artist from Vicenza whose skills as a writer, actor and director have been recognized on several occasions at national and international level. Critical spirit, often against the tide, to Vicenza and to the city’s cultural life, Vitaliano Trevisan has always remained linked in his own way, until his very recent participation in the film ‘La Rua. The magic of Vicenza ‘, produced by the Municipality ».

Jacopo Bulgarini d’Elci, ex councilor for culture from Vicenza, on his Facebook profile, he writes: «He is what I think is the greatest Italian novelist of our time. I was also a friend to him, many years ago, and we had recently met. But this personal aspect does not count for much, in the presence of the first theme: the greatest Italian novelist of our time has died, the only one who he knew how to tell this world and its nonsense with elegance, style, wit, and above all rhythm. His sensational novels and short stories remain. Above all, “The fifteen thousand steps”, and perhaps even more “A wonderful world”. Here, perhaps it is not, a wonderful world. And yet it is », he concludes.
