There has been no heavy rain in southern Taiwan for more than 500 days. Facing the worst drought in 30 years, Kaohsiung City’s water condition light has turned yellow, and water supply has been decompressed at night. The Water Resources Bureau of the Southern District of the Water Resources Department will transfer the groundwater from 11 wells in the Pingtung Industrial Park to Kaohsiung through pipes. It is expected to be completed by the end of April. If the drought persists by then, the maximum daily water supply will be 36,000 tons to support Kaohsiung’s people’s livelihood.
He Dafu, deputy director of the Southern District Water Resources Bureau of the Water Resources Department, said in a telephone interview that in order to solve the water shortage problem that Kaohsiung may face, emergency construction began in early March. The 11 existing wells located in the Pingtung Industrial Park will be taken over The groundwater is transported to the Gaoping River weir in Dashu District, Kaohsiung, with a total length of about 7.6 kilometers, and then transported to Chengcheng Lake and Pingding Water Purification Plant to support the domestic water supply of Kaohsiung citizens.
He said that the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of April. If the drought persists by then, it must be used. The maximum daily water supply is 36,000 tons to support the domestic water needs of Kaohsiung citizens.
He Dafu pointed out that the way of taking over the water supply will be removed after the drought is relieved. In order to avoid excessive extraction of Pingtung’s groundwater, the wells will also be monitored to pay attention to changes in the groundwater level, so as not to affect Pingtung’s water use.
